A Group of Six British Citizens Jailed for £1m Fire Attack on Storage Facility Containing Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid

Six Britons working on behalf of Russia’s Wagner group have been sentenced to prison for igniting a located in London storage unit that was storing humanitarian aid destined for Ukraine.

Sentencing and Roles

While delivering the sentences, the judge at the central criminal court stated that they had planned a “campaign of terrorism and sabotage” to benefit the Russian state.

The individual named Dylan Earl was given a seventeen-year jail term with an extra six-year period on extended licence due to his “primary involvement”. Another defendant, Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was given 12 years in jail with an additional year on supervised release. Their admitted crimes resulted in them being the initial persons to be found guilty under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, also from Croydon, was jailed for eight years and 10 months. Nii Mensah, 23, from Thornton Heath, south London, was sentenced to nine years and Ugnius Asmena, who was homeless, was handed seven years in prison. The trio were each found guilty of aggravated arson and given a further year on supervised release by the court.

Ashton Evans, a 20-year-old individual involved in drug trafficking from Newport in Gwent, was sentenced to nine years with an extra year on extended licence after being found guilty of failing to disclose details regarding acts of terrorism connected to a separate scheme in Mayfair.

Incident Specifics

The deliberate fire on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and resulted in £1m in damage in March of the previous year.

The proceedings revealed that Earl, 21 and the 24-year-old Reeves did not leave their bedrooms while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, representing the Russian government.

The group selected the warehouse because it was being used to supply emergency relief and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the identical Ukrainian firm was subjected to an intentional fire 10 days later in the Spanish capital, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command assumed control of the probe.

Evidence and Further Plans

When Earl was taken into custody, police analysis of his mobile phone uncovered he had videos of the warehouse fire being started and was in contact with the Wagner organization on the Telegram messaging app, via an account with the handles ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike’.

Some of the communications showed that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving fire-related incidents at a dining establishment and wine store in Mayfair owned by the Russian dissident Evgeny Chichvarkin had already been carried out. The employment of explosive devices to harm structures was also discussed.

Investigators found that the defendant Earl was also raising the potential abduction of the dissident Chichvarkin and “exiling him back to Russia to confront imprisonment”.

The drug dealer from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had discussed another potential attack in the Czech nation.

In a residence inspection, police located a flag of Russia, over twenty thousand pounds in currency and cocaine with a market value of about £34,000.

Driving Factors and Court Comments

The proceedings revealed he was a participant in multiple channels promoting Russian propaganda and was motivated by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This case is about the attempts by the Russian government to gain pernicious global influence using social media to recruit disruptors vast distances from Moscow.”

She determined the arson attack had a “link to terrorism” irrespective of if the perpetrators knew it. The Wagner group is proscribed by the British authorities as a terrorist group.
